Your identity is not fixed.
Neither is your experience.
You can regenerate both.
Do you know how much of your experience you are creating yourself? It's a lot more than you might currently realise.
Your internal world is giving form to your external world.
You have more control than you think. You have far more agency than you might believe.
You'll have heard before that your thoughts and beliefs shape your world, but there's much more to it than that. Your entire psychological makeup is selecting, filtering, shaping and predicting every aspect of your experience.
You go through life living out unconscious patterns, rules and ways of responding to and existing in the world. Your psychological conditioning is determining not just the way you think, feel and behave, but the very makeup of your life itself.
Your identity is running your life.
But..
Your identity can be changed, and as it changes, so too can your world.
Your experience of life is the expression of your patterns, your beliefs and ultimately your identity. This does not mean that you caused everything that has happened to you or that you control the behaviour of other people. It does mean however, that you have considerably more influence over what happens, both internally and externally, than you currently realise.
You might be experiencing issues in a particular relationship dynamic, emotional position, expectation, habit or interpretation or experience of self. Your leverage lies in the organising pattern that lies beneath these experiences and the work we do together gives you access to this leverage.
Life is happening. Relationships end. People hurt us. Losses occur and circumstances change in ways we would never have chosen. But, we do not experience these events neutrally. We experience them through an internal world shaped by everything we have previously learned, felt and come to expect.
Identity is the mechanism that is keeping you bound. Regeneration is what becomes possible when that mechanism loosens.
Identity is the past continuing to reproduce itself through expectation, attention and patterned response. Regeneration is when a different experience of self begins to form, producing possibilities that could not be perceived from within the pattern.
Identity patterns can be hard to reach on your own because generally, you can't see them. They shape, and define your life from an unconscious level. They can be as old as you are and as familiar as your childhood home. We live inside these conditioned responses and when these are harming us or holding us back, they need to be challenged and replaced and regenerated. This is the work we do together.
A PLACE TO BEGIN
Identity underlies experience.
Your identity is the pattern beneath the problem. It creates and recreates your experience through what you have learned to expect.
We all carry internal conclusions about who we are, what relationships are like, what we deserve, what is safe and possible for us. Those conclusions become organising principles. They influence what we tolerate, pursue, avoid and repeat. They shape the people and possibilities we recognise, the choices that feel available and the futures we can imagine.
This is why the same difficulty can appear repeatedly in different forms. The circumstances may change while the underlying expectation remains the same.
We can see identity at play in our lives in the habits we have formed. We can see ourselves reaching, in the same way, day after day for the thing that might be helping or hindering us.
Identity patterns can also return us physically or mentally to a relationship that has ended. It can be finding yourself drawn into familiar and unwanted emotional dynamics. It can be continuing to live defensively after the danger has passed. Expecting rejection, disappointment or failure before anything has happened. Or it can be reaching automatically for a behaviour that once provided relief.
Over time, what is familiar can begin to feel inevitable.
But, it doesn't have to be.
re
generation
Identity regeneration.
Generating a different way of becoming.
Regeneration is what becomes possible when the past is no longer permitted to organise the future.
Recovery is often understood as getting back to where you were before. Regeneration however, describes something more alive and full of potential. It is the development of new internal structures.
It is the process of updating psychological conclusions and creating an internal experience from which different expectations, responses and choices can automatically flow. As your internal organisation changes, you can begin to relate differently to yourself, to other people and to what happens around you. A different way of living becomes not only accessible but natural and normal for you.
You are not returning to who you were before. You are developing the psychological freedom to become someone no longer organised around what has happened in your past.
WAYS OF WORKING
The relationship may be over, but the identity formed within it can remain.
For many years, I have worked with people moving beyond painful, confusing and emotionally destructive relationships. This work evolved to address the profound loss of self that can occur when too much of life becomes organised around another person.
This remains a huge part of the work I continue to do with clients with the focus now on what it is that comes afterwards. What happens on the other side? Who are you now? What do you want? Have you become the person who would now automatically and naturally be repelled by the circumstances your past self was drawn to?
Ask yourself who you are when your life is no longer organised around understanding that person, or the relationship and its dynamics?
This is what we mean by regeneration rather than recovery.
